As you know, there were 5,520 people killed during the 10 seconds of the Great Hanshin Earthquake: that occurred on Jan. 17,1995, in Japan. After the earthquake, a total of about 6,400 peoples' lives were lost including the people killed by fires. This earthquake was an incident that showed that the modern city couldn't protect people's safety. Why couldn't the modern city do this? There are a lot of answers in this question. I believe that thinking of these one by one will lead to a reconstruction of the safer city. We are supporting to build this safer city. Machiken has been helping with the disaster measures in Kobe city and areas with similar needs since the Great Hanshin Earthquake occurred. We are a small civil reorganization consultant company, which challenges the safety of the city to save lives and to reduce the risk of avoidable disaster from future disasters.
The 21st century has begun. Keywords of the 21st century are "Safe", " Environment", and "Aging society".
Machiken is challenging these themes of making a safer city for the 21st century.
